Physical activity is a very important part of a healthy lifestyle because along with a healthy diet, it can prevent chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease. By being physically active, one can reduce fat, increase muscles, and helps control weight. If children want to grow up to a healthy weight, they need to be physically active for at least 60 minutes a day. Did you know that “8-18 year old adolescents spend an average of 7.5 hours a day using entertainment media” such as watching TV, playing video games, and talking and texting on a cellphone in a normal day. Also, “only 1/3 of high school students get the recommended levels of physical activity.” To help stop these astonishing facts children need to increase their physical activity by walking, riding bikes, playing sports, and being a part of a fitness program.
Schools are a great setting to help kids get their 60 minutes of physical activity. For one, schools can maintain strong physical education programs in their schools. In PE classes, students are playing games or etc. for at least 50 % of the time. Schools should also provide students with opportunities to be physically active, not just during PE class, but during other types of the day as well. Students could get most of their 60 minutes of activity by walking or riding a bike to and from school, being engaged in a PE class, recess, and being part of a sport. Some school leaders think that physical education programs are too expensive especially during budget cuts and the bad economy; however there are many low-cost and no-cost steps to promote a student’s “health without compromising academic pursuits.”
Communities also can promote physical activity such as the way they are designed. One factor is if the community is safe and in close distance. These two things play a very important role in rather child can get their 60 minutes of physical activity here or not. “If children can easily access safe parks and playgrounds in good condition, they are more likely to engage in recreational physical activity there.”
Family also plays a big role in a child’s physical activity level. It is an easy way to get the whole family outside and moving. It also helps when a child has their family to support them achieving the 60 minutes a day plan. Sleep also plays an important part of an active life. “A recent study found that with each extra hour of sleep, the risk of a child being overweight or obese dropped by nine percent.” Families should give children toys such as balls, jump ropes, and kites, encourage children to join a sport, limit TV time, take the stairs, and make sure that their child gets the adequate sleep that they need.
This is a very useful source for me because it is very detailed and gives good examples. The information is reliable because it comes from a person who has a lot of knowledge about childhood obesity. The goal of this source is to prevent childhood obesity by getting at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day. This source supports my research question and gives me strong evidence on why physical activity, such as playing sports, can prevent childhood obesity.
